The Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) provides leadership and expertise for helping the university achieve its diversity, equity and inclusion goals. Guided by social justice principles, we cultivate a vibrant learning and working community for all members. The following units are within ODI: ADA Compliance, Bias Incident Support Services (BISS), Diversity Training & Education (DTE), LGBTQ+ Equity Center, Nyumburu Cultural Center, Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct (OCRSM), Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE), and TerrapinSTRONG.

The ODI student assistant will support administrative, PR/marketing, and business functions of the office under the supervision of the business manager and/or communications officer. There are two positions available. 

General Duties:
Administrative Functions:

  • Provide administrative support to the Office of Diversity & Inclusion.

May provide assistance as follows: 

  • Desk & office coverage
  • Scheduling, delegation and organization of daily/weekly tasks
  • Track status of project/task completion
  • Communicate new information to team members
  • Assist with delivering materials
  • Assist with inventory of office supplies and equipment

 
Front Desk Coverage & Customer Service:

  • Provide backup front desk coverage by greeting guests, answering phones, fielding questions, relaying messages, and other day-to-day administrative functions.

  • Assist with news tracking (e.g. read Diamondback and other publications and note unit-relevant articles).

Marketing:

Public Relations:

  • Assist with promoting and staffing of ODI events throughout the year, including but not limited to representing ODI at general informational presentations, table displays, distributing brochures and generally providing information about the office and its programs.
  • Assist with outreach to students, student organizations, faculty/staff and community members.
  • Assist with specialized projects such as certificate preparation for awards recognitions
  • Help with set up and staffing for events such as hanging decorations, folding programs, etc.
  • Represent ODI at specialized events such as First Look Fair, open houses, Homecoming, Second Look Fair, etc., with duties such as tabling, greeting, managing set-up or take-down, etc.

 
Other Duties:

  • Attend regularly scheduled ODI staff meetings, 1:1 supervisor meetings, office meetings, and professional development to discuss shift scheduling, new information, and upcoming events.
  • Assist with recording results of evaluations following events.
  • Attend suggested campus multicultural trainings when possible
  • Plan and execute events, programs, workshops, etc.

  • Must be a registered undergraduate student in good standing enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland, College Park and must be making satisfactory progress toward the degree.

The Language, Experience, and Development (LEAD) Lab team studies how children’s early experiences—both favorable and adverse—influence their neural, cognitive, and academic development. 

Research Assistants in the LEAD Lab engage in a variety of tasks, including:

  • Recruiting participants
  • Facilitating child and family visits to the lab
  • Assisting with neuroimaging sessions
  • Examining videos for particular patterns of parent-child interaction
  • And much more!

Qualifications:

  • Must be eligible for FWS
  • The LEAD Lab is interested in applicants with a range of experiences, and we especially encourage students without previous research experience to apply.
  • Applicants with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, history of/interest in working with children and families, commitment to collaboration, and interest in the intersections of developmental psychology, developmental cognitive neuroscience, and educational equity may find a good fit in the LEAD Lab.
