Study Abroad FAQs

We cannot offer extra grant/scholarship funds for study abroad programs but students can apply their standard financial aid funds toward approved study abroad programs. 

Students studying abroad through UMD sponsored programs do not need to submit information to our office other than the FAFSA. The University's Education Abroad Office will communicate with our office to make sure that financial aid is paid out 10 days before the start of the term.

Students studying abroad with our partner programs need to coordinate with the advisors in the Education Abroad Office to fill out the right forms. The Education Abroad Office will communicate with our office to make sure that financial aid is paid out 10 days before the start of the term.

Students can most financial aid, but not state aid, towards non-UMD sponsored programs. Please contact the advisors in the Education Abroad Office to fill out the right forms.

  • Please be advised that OSFA cannot release any financial aid until the paperwork is completed. For example, if you need to buy a plane ticket, you may need to pay for it out of pocket until you receive your aid.

Yes, the credits earned while abroad can count towards the required 30 credits need to maintain your scholarship eligibility. You must get approval from your academic advisor for the credits to be accepted.
