General Overview

Employers welcome to the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program at the University of Maryland! The FWS program is a federally funded employment program that offers the university and other local organizations the opportunity to acquire free student services at little or no cost to the employer!  Employers assist students with building career skills and professionalism while gaining help in the office.  We encourage any University of Maryland department to apply and participate throughout the Fall/Spring and Summer terms. Non-University of Maryland departments are also encouraged to apply through a separate application process. Please visit our prospective employers link more details.

Building Young Professionals

FWS Employers are valued for the time and effort placed on helping students develop professionally.  For some students, FWS employment is their first real job. When employers offer effective training and supervision, students can learn time managing skills, build analytical and problem solving skills, and strengthen their communication.  Providing students with regular evaluation and feedback is also critical to their professional growth.  With your help, they can be great academic scholars and budding young professionals.

Benefits of Participating

Benefits of participating in the program include:

  • Free employees for most on-campus employers
    • Federal funds pay 75% for all employees
    • University of Maryland funds pays 25% for most employers except Auxiliary Service Units and Federal Government
  • Provide valuable professional skills to students
  • Receive eager, motivated employees to support departmental staff

How to Hire FWS Students

As an authorized FWS employer, you are responsible for recruiting and hiring eligible FWS students using traditional hiring practices.  The FWS website serves as the primary recruitment tool but employers may use other means such as posting flyers, sending emails through departmental mailing lists or by attending job fairs hosted through the University Career Center.

General hiring guidelines include verifying FWS eligibility, requesting cover letter & resume, scheduling an interview with the student, and communicating your hiring decision in a timely manner.
