Scholarships for Prospective Undergraduate Students

CampusDiscovery.com is currently offering a $5,000 scholarship to students who complete a survey and submit an essay on advice for college.

 

Provides a 10-week summer research experience for junior and senior undergraduate students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. Students will have the opportunity to conduct research in DHS mission-relevant areas at various federal research facilities. Participants receive a stipend of $500 each week plus transportation expenses to/from their internship location.

 

The DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program is intended for students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission. This education program is intended to ensure a highly talented science and technology community to achieve the DHS mission and objectives. Eligible students must be studying in a homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) field with an interest, major, or concentration directly related to one of the homeland security research areas (please see the website).

The award includes full tuition and fees and a monthly stipend plus a 10-week summer internship doing research in a DHS-related area.

 

Provides research opportunities to increase and enhance the scientific leadership at Minority Serving Institutions in research areas that support the mission and goals of DHS. The program supports research teams composed of a faculty member and up to two students (undergraduate or graduate level) for a 10-week summer internship doing research at a DHS Center of Excellence. The award includes a stipend plus transportation expenses to/from the internship location.

 

Delmarva Poultry Industry, Inc. College Scholarship Program

Undergraduate Scholarship: Scholarships in the amount of $1,500-$4,000 will be awarded to undergraduate students majoring in a subject relevant to Delmarva's poultry industry. High school seniors who have been accepted to an accredited degree granting institution are also able to apply.

Emerson Morgan Graduate Scholarship: Scholarships in the amount of $ 1,500-$4,000 will be awarded to graduate students engaged in research that directly benefits Delmarva's poultry industry.

Female students entering their senior year of undergraduate study/are enrolled in a graduate program, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, and are enrolled in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field, are eligible to be awarded $10,000.

 

Several scholarships are being offered for undergraduate and graduate students of Hispanic heritage. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $15,000. Deadlines vary.

Kids' Chance is offering scholarships for students between the ages of 16-25, who have a parent that has been catastrophically injured or killed in an employment-related accident in Maryland. The parent's death or injury must have resulted in a substantial decline in the family income.

Maryland Distinguished Scholar finalists are awarded an annual stipend of $3,000 for four years from the state of Maryland. Contact the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) at 1-800-974-1024 for information.

 

Winners will receive awards of $300 to $1,000.

The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) offers and administers the following scholarships and grants: Educational Assistance Grant, Guaranteed Access Grant, House of Delegates Scholarship, Senatorial Scholarship, and Distinguished Scholarship. Scholarships are provided to students majoring in horticulture, botany, landscape design, plant pathology, forestry, environmental concerns, biology as it relates to plants and similar subjects. Applicants must also live within the National Capital Area (Washington D.C, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in MD, and Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, and Prince William Counties in VA). The minimum award is $3,000.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has a variety of scholarships that are awarded to students based on academic performance. The University of Maryland serves as a sponsoring institution for students selected by NMSC to receive the College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship award. Students selected for the UM Sponsored Merit award will receive a four-year renewable scholarship ranging from $1,000-$2,000/year. All finalists should follow NMSC's instructions for first choice notifications carefully and observe deadlines to remain eligible for awards.

The National Merit Scholarship also awards Corporate-Sponsored merit scholarships and National Achievement awards.

 

The PFLAG Columbia-Howard County organization offers an annual scholarship of $1000 to a LGBT or Ally student. Recipient must be a resident of Maryland.

 

Polish Heritage Association of Maryland will be providing several $1,500 scholarship grants to both undergraduate and graduate students for the academic year 2010/2011.

To qualify the applicant must be a full-time college student during the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semester, a legal resident of Maryland, and have at least two Polish ancestors. Selection will be primarily made on the basis of financial need. Additional evaluation will focus on academic standing, leadership potential and pride of your Polish Heritage.

 

The President's Transfer Scholarship provides funding for a maximum of two years to transfer students enrolled at the University of Maryland. The annual award is in the amount of $5,000 and is determined through a competitive process based on academic talent. Students do not have to fill out a separate application to be considered for this award, as they will be evaluated based on their application to the University of Maryland.

 

The late Ruth Gosnell, a former Baltimore County teacher and principal, wanted to provide loans to College and Graduate degree students. The Ruth Gosnell Education Fund, established in 1982 by the Springfield Presbyterian Church's Session, provides interest-free loans to full-time deserving college juniors, seniors, and graduate school students. Regardless of religion, all applicants will be given impartial consideration; and repayment of the interest-free loan does not start until 6 months after graduation.

 

Southern Prince George's Business and Professional Women Scholarship

The SPG/BPW is administering a scholarship program for continuing education. Applicants must be a woman 25 years or older and reside in Prince George's County.

The Talbots Foundation is pleased to announce scholarship opportunities through the 2010 Women's Scholarship Fund. Applicants must be women looking to pursue a college education later in life. To date, over $1 million in scholarships to deserving women ranging in age from their late 20s to 60s has been awarded.

These awards are available to outstanding students transferring from Maryland community colleges. The awards cover in-state tuition and mandatory fees for two years of undergraduate study. To be eligible for consideration, students must have an overall grade point average of 3.5 for all college work attempted and must have completed an Associate of Arts degree or the entire first two years of courses for the major in which the student expects to enroll. Candidate nomination forms are available in late December from the UM Undergraduate Admissions Office or from community college advisers. The deadline for receipt of the application, official transcripts, and scholarships materials is early March.
