Scholarships for Graduate Students


The University of Maryland financial aid web site is an excellent place for Graduate Students to find out how to meet their educational costs. As you browse our site, you will find information about applying for student financial aid, available aid programs such as loans and federal work study, and costs. In addition to these options there are many scholarship/ fellowship opportunities graduate student may apply for. Please find a listing of these opportunities through the Graduate School web site.


The AERA offers doctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding minority scholars for academic appointments at major research universities. It supports fellows conducting education research and provides mentoring and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies.

Fellows will receive a 1-year stipend of $12,000 and up to $1,000 in travel support to attend the AERA Annual Meeting. Fellowships may be supplemented by university or department awards and tuition waivers. Such supplements are encouraged.

This program is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders).

 

The APA is offering various grants, scholarships, awards, and fellowships to graduate psychology students pursuing doctoral degrees or graduate research. Additional fellowships and programs are also offered for minority psychology graduate students.

Blakemore Freeman grants are awarded to individuals pursuing professional, academic, or business careers that involve the regular use of an East or Southeast Asian language. The grants fund a year of advanced language study at an institution in Asian such as the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei, or similar structured programs in Asia.

The grants cover tuition and a stipend for related educational expenses, basic living costs and transportation, but do not include dependent expenses.

 

CampusDiscovery.com is currently offering a $5,000 scholarship to students who complete a survey and submit an essay on advice for college.

 

Provides research opportunities to increase and enhance the scientific leadership at Minority Serving Institutions in research areas that support the mission and goals of DHS. The program supports research teams composed of a faculty member and up to two students (undergraduate or graduate level) for a 10-week summer internship doing research at a DHS Center of Excellence. The award includes a stipend plus transportation expenses to/from the internship location.

 

The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a PhD in scientific or engineering disciplines with an emphasis in high-performance computing.

Students in their first or second year of graduate study in the physical, engineering, computer, mathematical, or life sciences are eligible to apply for the DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship. Exceptional senior undergraduates who can meet all the requirements (as listed on the website) may also apply.

Delmarva Poultry Industry, Inc. College Scholarship Program

Undergraduate Scholarship: Scholarships in the amount of $1,500-$4,000 will be awarded to undergraduate students majoring in a subject relevant to Delmarva's poultry industry. High school seniors who have been accepted to an accredited degree granting institution are also able to apply.

Emerson Morgan Graduate Scholarship: Scholarships in the amount of $ 1,500-$4,000 will be awarded to graduate students engaged in research that directly benefits Delmarva's poultry industry.

Female students entering their senior year of undergraduate study/are enrolled in a graduate program, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, and are enrolled in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field, are eligible to be awarded $10,000.

 

Several scholarships are being offered for undergraduate and graduate students of Hispanic heritage. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $15,000. Deadlines vary.

Kids' Chance is offering scholarships for students between the ages of 16-25, who have a parent that has been catastrophically injured or killed in an employment-related accident in Maryland. The parent's death or injury must have resulted in a substantial decline in the family income.

The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) offers and administers the following scholarships and grants: Educational Assistance Grant, Guaranteed Access Grant, House of Delegates Scholarship, Senatorial Scholarship, and Distinguished Scholarship. They are based on need, merit, or both. For more information, please contact MHEC at 1-800-974-1024. To be considered for most MHEC aid, your FAFSA must be postmarked by March 1.

Scholarships are provided to students majoring in horticulture, botany, landscape design, plant pathology, forestry, environmental concerns, biology as it relates to plants and similar subjects. Applicants must also live within the National Capital Area (Washington D.C, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in MD, and Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, and Prince William Counties in VA). The minimum award is $3,000.

Polish Heritage Association of Maryland will be providing several $1,500 scholarship grants to both undergraduate and graduate students for the academic year 2010/2011.

To qualify the applicant must be a full-time college student during the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semester, a legal resident of Maryland, and have at least two Polish ancestors. Selection will be primarily made on the basis of financial need. Additional evaluation will focus on academic standing, leadership potential and pride of your Polish Heritage.

 

The late Ruth Gosnell, a former Baltimore County teacher and principal, wanted to provide loans to College and Graduate degree students. The Ruth Gosnell Education Fund, established in 1982 by the Springfield Presbyterian Church's Session, provides interest-free loans to full-time deserving college juniors, seniors, and graduate school students. Regardless of religion, all applicants will be given impartial consideration; and repayment of the interest-free loan does not start until 6 months after graduation.

 

Various fellowships allowing for the opportunity to pursue independent research projects in association with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff.

 

Southern Prince George's Business and Professional Women Scholarship

The SPG/BPW is administering a scholarship program for continuing education. Applicants must be a woman 25 years or older and reside in Prince George's County.
