Study Abroad Financial Aid Information Page

Studying abroad, whether for a year, semester, or short-term, is an exciting opportunity to take advantage of during your time at UMD. Our Office is eager to assist you with understanding financial concerns associated with going abroad before, during, and after your program. While we cannot offer additional grant or scholarship funds for study abroad programs, eligible students may apply their standard financial aid awards toward approved study abroad programs. There are several program options for UM students. These are organized into the following categories:

If you are not sure who is sponsoring your program, you can find out here.

Financial Aid Processing for UMD-sponsored (Maryland-in) Programs

  • Students studying abroad through Maryland-in-programs do not need to submit additional information to our Office to ensure processing of their financial aid for their time abroad.
  • The University's Education Abroad Office will submit a roster and study abroad budget for UMD-in-program participants to the Office of Student Financial Aid for review once the program is closed.
  • The Study Abroad Financial Aid Counselor will update the cost of attendance (COA) for participants to reflect the program costs, and will ensure that financial aid is disbursed ten (10) days before the start of the appropriate term at UMD.

Students studying abroad through UMD-affiliated programs need to complete the following forms to ensure processing of their financial aid for their time abroad:

For non-UMD sponsored programs only: OSFA will use the information provided on these forms to submit a Consortium Agreement to the host program, in order to have your enrollment status there confirmed. Please be advised that any financial aid for which you are eligible to receive cannot be disbursed until your enrollment has been confirmed by the host program.

  • Note: some Host Institutions will not return the Consortium Agreement until later in the semester, usually after the schedule adjustment date (add/drop period), which could be a few days or a few weeks into the semester. Please be advised that OSFA cannot release any financial aid until the completed Consortium Agreement is received. Once OSFA receives the completed Consortium Agreement (with course enrollment/registration information, program costs, and program dates), the student’s financial aid will disburse to his/her UMD student account. You may find it useful to contact your Host Institution regarding the date when your registration will be complete. OSFA recommends that you have some form of funding available to you as you wait for your financial aid to disburse.
