Special Enrollment Programs

Study Abroad
Permission to Enroll at Another Institution

Study Abroad

We cannot offer additional grant or scholarship funds for Study Abroad programs, but eligible students may apply their standard financial aid awards toward approved Study Abroad programs. Please complete a Study Abroad Financial Aid Worksheet, and submit to the Financial Aid Office along with a copy of your Permission to Study Abroad Form.

Permission to Enroll at Another Institution

It may be possible to take courses at another institution and receive aid for those courses from UM. For example, if you take 3 credits at UM and 3 credits at another eligible school, we could process your aid based on 6 credits of enrollment.

To qualify, your combined enrollment must equal at least 6 credits or 24 Graduate Units, your academic advisor must pre-approve the courses you plan to take at the other school, and the school you attend must be approved by UM for Permission to Enroll.

To apply, print the Financial Aid Worksheet for (Permission to Enroll), ask your academic advisor to complete a Permission to Enroll form, and submit a copy to the OSFA Permission to Enroll Coordinator. If your request is approved, we will disburse your aid to you and you will be responsible for paying the tuition at the other school.

One Semester Attendance

We must reevaluate your eligibility for aid if you will attend UM for only one semester of an academic year due to graduation, deferral of enrollment, co-op employment, or other reasons. Please notify us as soon as possible so we can promptly notify you of any adjustments.

Co-op Employment

To receive any financial aid or have your student loans deferred during a co-op semester, you must also enroll for at least 6 non-co-op credits in addition to any co-op credits. This applies to all UM students regardless of major or co-op program. Co-op credits do not count toward required enrollment for financial aid purposes.

Students who have borrowed Federal Stafford Loans are eligible to defer their loan payments as long as they maintain at least half-time enrollment. Because co-op credits do not count toward these enrollment requirements, if you have borrowed Stafford Loans and you co-op for a semester without taking at least 6 credits of other classes, your lender will expect you to start repaying your loans 6 months after your last date of at least half-time enrollment. If you enroll for at least 6 credits the following semester, you can stop making loan payments and put your loans back into deferment status at that time.

For example: Students who co-op for fall without taking other classes would have to start repaying their Stafford Loans in December (6 months after the end of spring classes in May). If these same students enrolled at least half-time for the following Spring, they could stop making loan payments and put their loans back into deferment status in January/February. Contact your lender or loan servicer for information on how much your payments would be and how many payments you would have to make before re-deferring your loans.

If you would like to enroll at another institution during the co-op semester, please read the next section.
