Description of Aid Programs

There are various types of financial aid available to Undergraduate and Graduate students at the University of Maryland. These types of aid can be classified as either need based or non-need based. Need based aid generally means that you and your family are not able to cover educational expenses. Non-need based aid generally refers to aid that you receive based on some merit or qualification.

Each aid program is unique and has different eligibility requirements and requirements may change over time. Please contact us if you have a question.

In addition to the different aid programs, you may want to consider a Payment Plan through the Office of the Bursar.

Loans

Loans are available from the Federal Government and through Private/Alternative lenders.

Grants

Grants are available from the Federal Government, the State of Maryland, and from the University of Maryland. These are need-based aid and do not need to be repaid.

Federal Work-Study

Federal Work-Study is a federally funded, need-based employment program available to both Undergraduate and Graduate students.

Scholarships

The University of Maryland awards a variety of scholarships from federal, state, and institutional resources to help defray the student's cost of education.

Graduate Assistantships

Assistantships offer a stipend, tuition remission and other benefits.
