Outside Scholarships


To apply for these scholarships, apply for admission to a degree granting program at UM. For maximum consideration, prospective freshman and transfer students must submit all admissions materials by December 1st.

American Cancer Society Champion Scholarship Program

The Society has established the College Scholarship Program to assist childhood cancer survivors in reaching their educational goals and investing in our future community leaders. The Society's College Scholarship Program is open to any survivor of childhood cancer who will attend an accredited two- or four-year institution and diagnosed before the age of 19, and who are currently 25 or younger. The Angie M. Houtz Memorial Fund

The The Angie M. Houtz Memorial Fund is pleased to announce a $3000 scholarship. Each year the Fund awards at least one $3000 scholarship to someone who exhibits great dedication to community service as well as academic achievement. American Society of Naval Engineers

The American Society of Naval Engineers sponsors a scholarship program to encourage students to enter the field of naval engineering and to provide support to naval engineers seeking advanced education. Scholarship awards of $3,000 for undergraduate students and $4,000 for graduate students will be made. For more information, visit our website www.navalengineers.org.

The Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP)

The center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Pacific Region. The APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. The Baltimore Community Foundation

The Baltimore Community Foundation is pleased to invite qualified students to apply for scholarship assistance from five scholarship programs administered. This year BCF is streamlining the process by using a common application format. The following scholarships programs are available and generally open to public high school students residing in the greater metropolitan Baltimore region. Please see the specific scholarships descriptions and criteria for exceptions and special requirements.

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship

Provides Master's and Doctoral funding for graduate students from Asia, the Pacific, and the U.S. to participate in educational and research programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate study at the University of Hawaii. Through East-West Center affiliation, awardees become part of a growing network of students and alumni forging the shape and substance of the world's most vibrant region. Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross Doctoral Research Grant

The Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross Doctoral Research Grant is a $5,000 award presented annually to a student researching later-life learning in any of various disciplines, including but not limited to psychology, education, gerontology, cognitive studies, neuroscience and social work. The grant recipient will be determined by a selection committee consisting of professors, practitioners and other leaders in the field of lifelong learning. Hispanic College Fund

The Hispanic College Fund Program includes multiple Scholarship Awards. Each program has different requirements and deadlines. Visit http://scholarships.hispanicfund.org/applications to find out which program fits you best.

John Gyles Education Awards

The John Gyles Education Awards are available each year to students in both Canada and the United States. They are the result of a private, benevolent endeavor established in 1990. Full Canadian or American citizenship is a requirement. Awards are available to both male and female students for all areas of post secondary study. A minimum GPA of 2.7 is required. Criteria other than strictly academic ability and financial need are considered in the selection process. Selected students will receive up to $3,000.00.

KeyBank Take Five Scholarship Program

KeyBank is pleased to present the Take 5 Scholarship Program. They will be giving away one $5,000 scholarship each month from September through August. Registering is quick and easy, so make sure you visit www.Key.com/Take5 to enter each month.

MENSA Local Scholarship Program

The Maryland MENSA program holds a scholarship essay contest each year. Cash awards of $300-$1,000 are granted to winners. The contest is free and open to public. For more information and an application, please visit http://www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships.

Mid-Atlantic Security Traders Foundation

The Security Traders Association is a professional trade organization that works to improve the ethics, business standards and working environment for members who are engaged in the buying, selling, and trading of securities. The Foundation intends to award four $2,500 scholarships annually, one in each member jurisdiction of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Eligible candidates to be considered for the scholarship application should be undergraduate who are currently sophomore or junior business majors with a concentration in finance or economics and who are enrolled at a four-year state-sponsored college or university. Requirements consist of a completed application form, grade point average transcript, and school and summer addresses and telephone numbers. Also, a 500-word essay entitled "How the securities markets affect our daily lives" is required. For more information please contact Linda Ludeke at 1-800-227-0120.

National Student Nurses Association

Are you a nursing student looking for additional financial assistance? The National Student Nurses Association offers a number of worthwhile scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students. For more information and to download applications, please visit www.nsna.org.

Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA)

On behalf of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, PHEAA will administer the Pennsylvania Chafee Education and Training Grant Program for the 2007-08 academic year. The program offers grant assistance to Pennsylvania undergraduate students aging out of foster care who are attending a postsecondary institution approved for federal Title IV student financial assistance programs. Maximum awards under this program are $5000 per academic year. Funding is limited, so awards will be made on a 'first-come, first served' basis to eligible students. Phi Kappa Phi

As part of its efforts to recognize and encourage academic achievement, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi sponsors the Emerging Scholar Award. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi grants 60 scholarship awards of $250 to sophomore students in all areas of study. The Point Foundation Scholarship

The Point Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of numerous scholarship opportunities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. The Point Foundation provides financial support, mentoring, and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. The Point Foundation recognizes that individuals may be socially marginalized or even abandoned by family, friends and society because of their sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. These lives should not be further disadvantaged as they prepare for the future. By identifying and supporting these scholars, The Point Foundation hopes to provide a greater level of acceptance, respect and tolerance within future generations for all persons, regardless of sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. In addition, we strive to provide higher education opportunities to outstanding students who otherwise would not have the chance to go to school. The Presidential Forum on Renewable Energy

The Presidential Forum on Renewable Energy is sponsoring a nationwide college student essay contest in which three undergraduate students will be named and awarded a $10,000 educational prize. The $10,000 will be paid to each of the three students who submit a winning essay. The essays will be evaluated on their originality, on their political, economic, and technical feasibility, and on their long-term viability. For more information visit www.2008energyforum.org.

Ramapo for Children

How about a summer job that makes a difference? Camp Ramapo is one of the few residential summer camps serving children with emotional, behavioral, and learning problems. Ramapo provides a safe, predictable, and highly structured environment, which fosters the development of positive social and learning skills. In addition, Ramapo offers an on-site college course. The Sallie Mae 911 Education Fund

The Sallie Mae 911 Education fund was created in response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The scholarship program is open to children of those who were killed or permanently disabled as a result of the terrorist attacks, and who are enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at approved, accredited institutions. Scholarship awards of up to $2,500 per applicant, per school year, are available and may be renewed on an annual basis, subject to satisfactory academic progress. The deadline is open. Talbots Charitable Foundation

The Talbots Foundation is pleased to announce scholarship opportunities through the 2008 Women's Scholarship Fund. Applicants must be women who plan on enrolling full or part time in undergraduate studies. Other conditions apply. Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation is seeking highly motivated college sophomores who have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2 and are interested in becoming Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. Department of State. Applications can be found online at www.woodrow.org.

University of Maryland Alumni Association-International, Inc. (AA-I) Scholarship

The Alumni Association International (AA-I) is awarding scholarship(s) to incoming freshman students of UMCP and Transfer Students. Incoming Freshmen Students must have a combined SAT score minimum of 1000 (1200 preferred) and 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale cumulative academic high school grade point average. Transfer Students must have been accepted in one of the USM institutions and have a minimum cumulative 3.5 grade point average from the institution from which transfer is being made.

Unmet Need Scholarship

Open to families with a combined income of $30,000 or less, this program is intended to supplement financial aid packages that fall more than $1,000 short of students' financial needs. This scholarship is not designed as a substitute for aid provided by an institution. The Unmet Need Scholarship is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are accepted or enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at approved, accredited institutions. Students must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) to be eligible to apply. Recipients will be selected based on financial need. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,800. Deadline is May 31, 2006. Download an application from www.salliemaefund.org.

VA Mortgage Center.com Scholarship Fund

VA Mortgage Center.com offers five bi-yearly $1,500 scholarships in conjunction with their Military Education Scholarship Program. These scholarships are awarded each year in May and November. Please check their site for more information and eligibility requirements.
